BAMFIELD

Vancouver Island's west coast is noted for its beautiful beaches and rugged coastline where pristine snowcapped mountains are outlined in the background. It is here in the Barkley Sound area that offers some of the best salmon and halibut fishing in the world.

In the Sound, fishing is available all year long, but the serious fishing season gets under way in spring. The winter often brings incredibly high winds and huge surf which makes it difficult and dangerous for the sport fisherman to get out. However, there are days when the weather has allowed us to fish just outside the mouth of the harbour, for feeder springs ranging in weight from 8- to 25-pounds. Most fisherman use a variety of lures anywhere from hootchies to Coyote spoons or anchovies with Rhys Davies head holders. They can all prove productive as long as they glow. The most popular lure so far this year has been the Coyote green glow in 4 and 5-inch lengths.
