NANAIMO

Chinook fishing was superb in late April and all of May in Nanaimo waters in 2009. A huge school of early Fraser fish held in the offshore deep water from the Five Finger and Entrance Islands as there were large schools of herring, and the mass of krill was 40-feet deep and spread for miles. Generally, these fish were two to four miles offshore in 800-feet of water. Typically, depths ranged from 120- to 140-feet, but changed with the bait movement. The Chinook ranged from 12- to 18-pounds, but several tyee were taken during this time. Most of these fish had marbled flesh, with orange and red mixed with lighter flesh tones. They made superb eating.

Lures of interest include Rhys Davis teasers in clear green scale or green/chartreuse for whole or strip baits, Coyotes in black/white, glow green, or green/white, or the green spackleback or Army Truck hootchie.
