GOLD RIVER – NOOTKA SOUND

The approach of fall weather traditionally means the fishing pressure will start declining, mostly because family vacationers with school-age children must head for home. Unfortunately, they will be missing what usually proves to be the nicest month of the year, for September in Nootka Sound means pleasant weather and reasonably calm water conditions.

Although the southward migration of Chinooks is starting to dwindle, they can be caught right into mid-September and are often some of the season's largest. Good areas for these late-running trophies are right off the mouth of Nootka Sound, Burdwood Point and Escalante Rocks.

You can also expect to find lots of 10- to 15-pound coho feeding actively offshore and inshore, even a few that will hit 20 pounds or more.
