PARKSVILLE QUALICUM BEACH
September is the best time of year for fishing opportunities on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Anglers can head for the beaches to try fooling a few coho, or concentrate on having a last shot at tangling with some big Chinooks before they head upstream on their final spawning runs.
The current lure of choice for open ocean Chinooks is a Green/Glow Coyote, Lucky Dog or Tomic spoon trolled behind a Jelly Fish or Purple Haze O'Ki Flasher. Once they move inshore, the Qualicum and Little Qualicum estuaries yield some fabulous late-season Chinooks. This shallow water fishery (10-12 metres) can provide the year's best action, especially during evening high tides. Pulling a 6-inch-long 602 Tomic Plug is a good way to attract fish that might well exceed 30 pounds.
