ALBERNI VALLEY

Dwellers in Port Alberni have switched most of their attention to the local lakes. River fishing for steelhead has come to an end as the fish have either started, or have spawned and are making their way back to the ocean. In the larger lakes such as Sproat, Great Central and Cameron, attention is focused around the creek mouths where most fishing activity is found. In the smaller lakes around the valley, look for deeper holes in shallow lakes and higher areas in the deep lakes. With low snow packs and warm temperatures getting into the smaller lakes in the back country is accessible and producing. Whether you enjoy throwing spinners from shore, trolling flatfish or just using worm and a bobber, opportunities for good trout fishing have begun early this year. Hopefully you can get out and take advantage of it.

Those venturing to Barkley Sound in anticipation of the potential largest return of Columbia River Chinook in the past 60 years should look to the Cree, Austin and Ship Islands for the best fishing.
