SOOKE

The recent announcement that opened the recreational halibut season on February first was good news for our Sooke area. Our local halibut fishery area is unique in that there is great interest and participation in this early-timed opportunity. March and April are both very productive halibut months and often the largest of the season are caught during this period. The daily limit being one halibut per person is just fine as our fishery does produce a high percentage of halibut well above chicken size.

Look for days in these months that allow longer periods of slower moving currents. (Under 2-mph.) If you’re a novice halibut fisherman, consider getting a couple of buddies together and share a guided charter with a local halibut expert. I can’t think of a better way to quicken the learning curve!

Places that give up nice halibut catches every spring are Race Rocks, The Bluffs, Point No Point, Jordon River and Sombrio.
