ZEBALLOS
May starts the fishing season around Esperanza for us. We see the majority of these first runs of migratory springs heading south to the Columbia, Sacramento and other US river systems. Many of these fish will be caught close to shore in 109- to 150-feet of water even though the ledge from Low Rock to Tatchu Point produces well from 80-feet to the bottom.
Smaller spoons and squirts will take the majority of these fish, but because the bait is quite small, match your lures accordingly. The fish highway from 240- to 300-feet deep will also have runs passing by where many will travel deeper.
Trolling with 100- to 200-feet of cable will provide good action. I suggest switching your steel cable over to the new braided downrigger line. Use 175- to 200-pound test braid on riggers. The braid cuts through the water and has less drag than steel wire.
